london, half awake, day 1

With glorious fanfare, I arrived in London at precisely 11:43, AM, GMT. Unfortunately, my minicab (which appeared to just be a van) was expecting me at 12:45 (unclear why..did he think it would take an hour to clear customs?) so I had a bit of the time in the airport to avail myself of the duty-free and everpresent Starbucks. No free wifi on this side of the pond. :(

However, I am on free wifi now–something has just floated into my room that was most certainly not there when I went to sleep. Which brings me to why I’m writing a post at 2:40 AM…despite often suffering from jetlag, and having discovered the wonderful abilities of melatonin, sold as a dietary supplement in the US, I FORGOT it.

So I happily went to bed at 9, only to wake up at 1:45 AM.

Alas.

However, the flight was free from both crying babies and obese people, which was a definite plus. In fact, I made a new friend–a doctor from Vancouver. She’s a GP, and I now have her email.

I don’t think there is any other equivalent to airplanes for meeting random people. Train/Subway people invariably have headphones/closed compartments (or the space is too open; you don’t want to be the only people talking, on show for everyone) and buses people seem to be in too much of a rush. At least that’s my perception. Thoughts?

Anyway, it appears Jeffrey has just woken up as well, so I think we’ll play some cards and try to sleep more. Pictures forthcoming, when I can get internet that is more than 1 mbps and poor signal.

…and i’m off!

Despite the worries of some dear anonymous friends of the family (see here), I have made it to Seatac and am happily(ish) sitting by my gate. Some thoughts:

1) BA blatently lies. They advertise that they close check-in and baggage drop 2 HOURS before departure. Perhaps they get a kick out of stressing their passengers out. At least other airlines have started flying London-Seattle; maybe I can avoid them in the future.

2) Apparently, my Starbucks card allows me to use the attwifi in Seatac! A glorious surprise. To all of you out there who don’t already use (abuse?) this: definitely get one. All you have to do is use your Starbucks card periodically, I believe once every 3 months, and you get free wifi in all Starbucks. AT&T (Starbucks’ wifi provider) also provides wifi in Seatac…and apparently my Starbucks account also allows me to use the wifi here. Thank you Starbucks, AT&T. You made a friend today.

Other than that, here I go! 9 hours in seat 31A. Let’s pray for no small children and no obese neighbors.

London, here I come!
