status update

I’m currently trying to teach myself IEEE single precision value and related computer architecture stuff.

Term ends in a week.

Emily, one of my friends from high school, is arriving today to visit.

Fall has just about ended. Winter is almost here.

I leave for India in 14 days.

Sickness

Apologies for the delays in updating. Unfortunately, I seem have got the “Freshers’ Flu,” a catchall term for the illnesses students get while living in residence halls. Interestingly, this term is thrown about here with the same frequency that we reference the “Freshman fifteen” in the United States.

Which is a little amusing–U.S. students gain weight, British students get sick.

Anyway. I’m off to Oxford on Wednesday, for formal hall. I’m really excited, this is the England of my imagination!

This is what I expect Oxford to be.

At UCL, we have conquered fire

Today, there was a fire drill. It was at 7:30 am, which was irritating, as I was asleep. However, even more strange was:

  1. It was clearly planned, as all of the wardens/vice-wardens were outside, wearing bright yellow “Fire Warden” jerseys
  2. They took attendance before they would let us back into the building

I don’t understand. Were they looking to see who was in their room at 7:30 am? Even more oddly, all of the British students seemed to be concerned for Emilie, who lives across the hall from me, as she hadn’t signed out (she had spent the night somewhere else).

We aren’t supposed to leave without telling the residential staff? What if I (yes, this is extremely unlikely) started going for 5 am runs?

UPDATE: Emilie received a letter asking her to explain her whereabouts during the fire drill this morning. Apparently, there is a book next to the front office which, whenever you are not going to be at JD overnight, you are required to write in, explaining who you are, your room, and your destination/reason for being out. Naturally.

Anyway, this is the view from my window, as taken by my trusty webcam:

This is what I see every day. Sometimes without the truck.

courses at UCL

Just to clarify any confusion–I’m going to UCL this year, as my junior year abroad from Tufts.

While I am a third year at Tufts (a four-year degree system) the UCL system is a three-year degree system (for computer science). As such, the CS program here has a lot more required classes, and a lot less space for electives. Hence, I’m taking a combination of first, second and third year classes. This term, it is:

  • Computer Architecture–what would be Comp40 at Tufts, but is Comp1001 (yes, the very first class) here
  • Software Engineering and Human Computer Interaction–seems to be a conglomerate of two very different subjects…second year course here
  • Game Theory–exactly what it sounds, Econ, fun, wonderful…at least so far (third year course)
  • British Politics–required for students who want a parliamentary internship in the spring (i.e., me) its only for Tufts students…and there are only 9 of us taking it.

…and that’s my courses!

Impressions will follow later this week.
